Transforming Lives: Supporting Ethiopia’s First Trauma Clinic for Street Animals
In Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, where the streets are crowded and the number of street dogs is overwhelming, a groundbreaking initiative has taken root—the Animal Welfare and Protection Trauma Clinic. Established by passionate animal welfare advocate Hanna Assefa, this clinic and shelter were created to address the urgent need for medical care for injured and neglected animals across the city.
Every day, countless dogs suffer from untreated injuries caused by traffic accidents, painful uterine prolapses, severe mange, and wounds from human aggression. Without intervention, these animals endure unimaginable suffering. Many limp through the streets with untreated broken limbs, their pain ignored by a city unequipped to help.
The trauma clinic provides a lifeline. It offers medical treatment, performs spaying and neutering to curb overpopulation, and works to find loving homes for rehabilitated animals through also in partnership with AAP Addis Animal Project. This facility, along with its associated shelter, is the first of its kind in Ethiopia, paving the way for a future of compassion and care for the country’s animals.
Beyond emergency care, the organization is committed to sustainable, long-term solutions. Their sterilization and vaccination programs not only address overpopulation but also help reduce the incidence of rabies and other preventable diseases, improving the well-being of animals and public health. Through community outreach initiatives, the organization raises awareness about the importance of animal welfare, fostering a culture of compassion for Ethiopia’s street animals.
