One of our worst fears here at the rescue are calls that come after hours, especially those that concern shelters.  Such is the story of Spencer.  This badly neglected little boy found himself in a high kill shelter in Philly stricken with pneumonia and then moved to the Euthanasia Room when we learned of his presence.  Worst of all the shelter had just closed to normal hours, but things like that rarely stop the motivated.

He is a dachshund, he needed us and we had fifteen whole minutes to make a difference. The phone calls began and thanks to ‘Paws Give Me Purpose’ his safety was secured.  We hopped in our cars and headed for the shelter.  Timing is everything and we are so grateful for PMP’s timely support on this one.

You never know what you will see when you meet a dog slated for euthanasia and Spencer was nothing short of shocking.  His level of emaciation was apparent; every bone in his body was visible.  He struggled to take a breath and a thick yellow pus dripped from his nostrils through his labored breathing.  He quivered, partially in fear, partially from his fever due to the pneumonia he battles.  Heartbreaking does not begin to describe it.  Still his sad eyes looked to us for help, and he attempted a weak tail wag.  We knew we had to do everything we could to help save this forgotten little boy’s life.

So, what’s the plan?  We will try to keep costs down by completing the labs in our lab, but exams, x-rays, hospitalization and medications will add up quickly.  Still, without care and specialized attention Spencer will soon earn his wings.  He is only 3 years old.  We cannot let this happen. 

Like so many of the dogs we help, Spencer’s care is not an expected expense and today we are reaching out to ask in your help to offset the near $6,500 in charges he will likely incur.  Keep in mind, we wouldn’t change a thing in his care, but this bill is crippling for DRBC too.

So today, we are turning to the DRBC Gang to help.  Sometimes love just won’t do it and Spencer really needs your financial support.  Remember, nothing is free to the rescue. Without support from kindhearted people like you, DRBC cannot be there when a pupper needs us most.  Prayers and good thoughts won’t get it done either.  Please consider him and make a difference today.  You can brag to friends that you are part of Team Spencer!
