Dachshund Rescue South Florida hasn't added a story.
A couple of weeks back we were contacted to see if we could take in a senior girl from a shelter in central Florida. The person who contacted us was willing to pull her from the shelter and transport her to us here in south eastern Florida (and even offered to foster, the family had fostered for DRSF a few years back).
Usually when we get these kinds of messages, they end with “HELP THE DOG!!”, then they get annoyed when we don’t have endless resources and volunteers. With the promise of all of that assistance in getting her safe, we said yes.
We knew she was a senior and that she was likely blind and maybe even deaf. She was pulled, named Grace and went to Pet Medical Center of Boca Raton. She got the preventative treatments she needed, got her teeth cleaned up and was put on eye meds to try to get the eye ulcer under control.
Over the past week her eye started getting progressively worse rather than progressively better. Once through the holiday weekend, we knew something had to be done sooner rather than later. Poor sweet Grace was in pain, we cannot have that!
Last night Pam reached out to our friend Dr. Unis at Access Vet of Palm Beach looking for some relief for sweet Grace. Of course he said get her here, so first thing this morning her foster family brought her to see Dr. Unis. It’s been determined that the eye is now beyond saving and the best thing for Grace is to remove the very painful eye. She’s getting the pre-op work up she needs and will have surgery to remove the eye as soon as possible.
For those of you who don’t know Dr. Unis, he used to work at
LeadER Animal specialty hospital and has recently opened his own
specialty hospital in West Palm Beach. The hospital is a 24 hour
emergency clinic with a wide array of specialists on staff;
criticalists, surgeons (Dr. Unis is a very talented board certified
surgeon), a neurologist, ophthalmologist, internal medicine
specialists and soon will have a cardiologist. They also have lots
of brand new state of the art diagnostic machines and even room
where they produce oxygen for when pets need to be placed in an
oxygen cage. They have only been open since April of 2021, so if you
are in need of emergency or specialty medicine for your pet in West
Palm Beach, give them a call.
They are as kind and caring as all of the vet hospitals that
partner with DRSF. We are grateful for Dr. Unis and his team and
look forward to getting Grace pain free as quickly as possible.
We can only do what we can do thanks to the not only our incredible vetting partners but our community as well. Would you consider a donation of any size to help cover the cost of removing Grace's eye?
