Bertha Had Been Over Bred and Abused
We often get push back on our policy to not adopt to families who choose to not spay or neuter. We get some nasty emails and phone calls when these applicants are denied (even though it is stated on the website and application that we don’t). We have no issues taking this nastiness because we do it for dogs like beautiful Bertha.
It’s pretty clear that Bertha had been used for breeding before she
came to us and then her puppies were sold with no regard for where
they are going or for the health of their mom.
Who knows how many litters this sweet girl raised and then were
sold. What we do know is that because of this breeding and lack of
spaying, Bertha is now in a position that she needs major medical care.
Lack of spaying has caused Bertha to grow several mammary masses
that will require a surgeon to remove and she will be spayed at the
same time. There will be weeks of recovery and we will all hold our
breaths while we wait for the pathology report and hope upon hope that
those reports come back that the masses are benign and we have fully
cured her.
Bertha has been seen by Dr. Bruce at Dr. Bruce’s Animal Hospital
for bloodwork and chest X-rays to be sure that she will be stable
enough for surgery and that her chest is clear of any masses. Once we
have those results back, we will get her scheduled for her surgery.
