Dachshund Rescue South Florida hasn't added a story.

There are three letters that come with with a shelter blast for a dachshund that strike fear into our hearts.....HBC.

Everyone who has been with us for a while will know that HBC is "shelter language" for Hit By Car.  HBC's can bring a multitude of challenging injuries but the worst injury of all, by far, is a dog with a broken pelvis.

It is our biggest foe.

It keeps us up at night.

It makes our treasurer break out in a cold sweat. 

Why is a broken pelvis so bad you ask?

Here's why.....it is the MOST expensive procedure we do on any regular basis, even more expensive than IVDD surgery AND this is after the INCREDIBLE discounts given to us by our partner vets. 

If we commit to taking a dog with a broken pelvis, we are looking at at least $6,000 straight out of the gate. 

The other thing about a broken pelvis - the dog looks fine.  Can't see the injury.  If you can't see the injury, understandably, it can't be that bad.  The dog is not starving, the dog is not bleeding, you can't "see" what is wrong and thus, no emotionally compelling reason to donate. 

We totally get it. 

We know all of that.  And then we get pictures of dogs like Apollo.

There aren't a lot of rescues lining up to take broken pelvis dogs and for Apollo, there was only one way out of the shelter. It was us or nobody.

Tonight, Apollo is at LeadER being evaluated for what it will surgically to put him back together again and it will take a lot of time and a lot of expertise and a lot of metal to do so. 

Oh, and did we mention his x-rays showed that he has a bullet inside him too?  Cause why not...

Life has not been kind to Apollo, and we are hoping that together, we can change that.

We have had an incredible donor step up and offer a $1,000 matching challenge to double everyone's Doxie dollars to (hopefully) help us cover Apollo's tab.

This is a big ask.  You helped us cover our three Miami Hoarding Dogs this week, and we have fingers and paws crossed that you think Apollo is worth it.
