We have heard some rough stories from out of the shelters over the years, but this one shattered our hearts in a whole new way.  Here’s the backstory:

A blast went out on the internet for three dogs who had been picked up as strays in the West Palm area.  All three went to the local shelter, where the owner, somehow came be aware that ALL THREE of their dogs had gotten out, and to their credit, came to the shelter and paid the fines to get them back.

What happened next is what broke our hearts – The owner turned around and brought Kai back to the shelter and surrendered him because he needed medical care.  There was no guarantee that Kai would get the care he needed, let alone make it out of the shelter alive, but his former owner signed the paperwork and walked away.

So now Kai had lost his family twice, was in need of urgent medical care, and rescue was his only way out

The shelter medical records told a story of  a hard life and long term neglect: were “Kai is a four year old intact male…has severe anemia at 8.8% (PCV is usually at a minimum 35%), bupthalmous oculars, and possible glaucoma.  He also has a severe chronic flea infestation. He appears stable, but his eye is swollen”.

To say Kai’s eye was swollen was an understatement and his fur looked so dirty and uncomfortable and we had to get him out of there.  Kai had suffered enough.

We put out hold on Kai and he was shortly on his way to LeadER in Boca where he will get the medical care he needs to heal is body, and the start of the emotional and love care he needs to heal his heart.

You have made miracles for Bean and Lupita this week and we have fingers and paws crossed that you might have a little love left to help Kai.
