The photos and pleas for help for her went out across social media… a little girl, living under a porch, huge mammaries, no puppies in sight, and a lump on her back leg that she was not bearing any weight on.
Who knew how long she had been out there, injured, fighting,
hungry, hot, and hurting with only a dirty water bowl and the slats
of a porch above her to keep her safe from the elements.
Her story made it to us, and we knew this little girl had fought bravely way longer than she should have had to. She needed medical care and she needed a chance.
We said those words that we can only say because we know that so many of you are with us….”Yes, we can help”
We figured it would be something easy with her leg, some pain meds perhaps, maybe a sprain. Nothing that a few days of rest and pain meds couldn’t cure, right?
The sweet girl with the big eyes and hurt leg was rescued from under her porch and made her way to Dr. Bruce’s Animal Hospital to start her new life, with a new name - Zinnia. Her nails were long, and her fur was dirty, but her eyes were full of hope, even while being surrounded, poked, and prodded by a bunch of new people in a new place. All was going well until Dr. Bruce got to looking at her leg and x-rays revealed that not only was Zinia’s leg broken, but it was “need a surgeon” broken so off to LeadER, Zinnia went.
Zinnia’s leg has a spiral fracture a “type of bone fracture caused by a twisting force, often resulting in a break that spirals around the bone” which will require surgery for her to heal properly. She also has a couple of mammary masses that need to be removed, and from her exam, it looks like this sweet girl has already had more than her fair share of puppies, so she will also be spayed, so that she doesn’t have to worry about that any longer.
We don’t even want to imagine how her leg got broken from a
twisting motion an how much it had to have hurt when it did, and how
she has kept herself alive (and probably puppies too).
Whatever it is, it is more than any dog should have to bear and if you can help us care for Zinnia, we can be ready to be there for whoever is out there and will need us soon.
