Imagine having a home and a Mom and a Dad who loved you. You get snuggles, run and play outside, have treats, and know you are safe and loved.
And then imagine that one day, all of a sudden, your legs don't work any more and you are in so much pain. You can't figure out what is going on and your back hurts SO much, but you know your Mom and Dad will take care of you.
Imagine getting in the car with them, thinking they are taking you to get some medicine to see if they can make you feel better and the next thing you know, you are in a very different place, with different smells than you are used to and different noises than you are used to.
Before you know it, your Mom and Dad are signing some papers and walking away, and some strangers are putting you into a cage.
Wait? What happened? Where did they go? Why am I here? Mom? Dad? Did you leave me here?
That is exactly what happened to this beautiful little girl today.
And you know what is all the more heartbreaking?
Her family had health insurance and still surrendered her. (As difficult as it is, we try SUPER Hard not to judge, we don't know what it is like to walk in someone's shoes......but it also paints a picture of the fact that so often, the "cost" of medial care is not the problem, it is the willingness to provide the recovery care...)
This little girl's heart was not the only one that was broken - the Shelter Staff at the Cape Coral Animal Shelter's hearts were broken too. They couldn't stand to see this little girls story end at a shelter being paralyzed and abandoned by her family.
They reached out to us.....could we help?
We have dogs coming out our ears, and this would be our 6th IVDD case in less than 3 months - we would be on the hook for another $4,500.
We looked at those eyes - We are Dachshund Rescue. If not us, than who?
We said yes.
Our Doxie Taxi arranged transport and tonight the little girl we have named Giselle is under the care of Southeast Veterinary Neurology where she is being evaluated to see if she is a candidate for surgery.
