Ollie didn’t ask to lose his ability to walk.
Ollie didn’t ask to be taken to Southeast Veterinary Neurology.
Ollie didn’t want IVDD.
Ollie wanted to go home with his family and he wanted to walk.
Ollie’s family brought him to SEVN having lost the use of his back legs. They hoped for something easy to treat, with a quick recovery time.
IVDD is a cruel master and does not offer either.
His family did not have the resources – either the finances to afford the surgery, or the bandwidth to provide the 6 weeks post-operative care and crate rest on the back end of IVDD surgery.
And there sat Ollie with his big eyes, soft furry ears and his back legs that didn’t work any more. We wonder if sweet Ollie understood what was happening or worried what would happen to him.
His family wasn’t able to provide the care he needed.
What were their options?
Dr. DePompa stepped out of the room to make a call. There was only one call he could make if Ollie was to have a chance…..
President Pam’s phone rang on her birthday.
President Pam always answers when Dr. DePompa calls, even on her birthday.
It was a big ask – we currently have two dogs on wheels that we have been unable to place. Taking on a 3rd dog who might not walk again is a huge gamble for us right now.
Dr. DePompa is a very wise man- he is a neurosurgeon after all – he said “let me send you a picture of Ollie”
Those soft furry ears and the worried look in his eyes.
Yes, yes we can help.
Ollie is under the care of Dr.DePompa and will be going to surgery at SEVN this evening. He has a 50% chance of walking again and we are back on the hook for another major surgery.
Our war chest is running way low, but if not us, then who will be the safety net for Ollie and we are back to ask your support to help us save another life – would you be able to spare a few dollars for Ollie (or for President Pam’s birthday??) to help us cover Ollie’s care so we can be there for him and be ready for whoever is out there and will need us next?
