We have had more than our share of “HBC’s” (Dogs hit-by-cars) over the years, but sweet Smitty’s story is a new one for us….he was hit by an Amazon truck.  

We don’t 100% know the circumstances and are trying to give the benefit of the doubt that the driver did not know what happened, BUT the long and short of it is, Smitty was hit by an Amazon truck. 

As we understand it, a good Samaritan saw this happen and took Smitty to Animal Control in need of urgent medical care.  His owners were located and surrendered him to the shelter.  President Pam got the call from the shelter asking if we could help him, and of course, once we saw him he had us hook, line and sinker. We mean- look at that face!

Upon getting sprung from the shelter, Smitty was transported to Boca LeadER where he was seen by Dr. Gerber and had x-rays which revealed a fractured fibula and lots of bruising. 

Smitty went on to have a surgical consult with Dr. Z and the good news is that Smitty’s fracture is not surgical.  The bad news is that splints don’t work on little, stubby dachshund legs and thus, Smitty will need about 8 weeks of crate rest to heal up which takes longer, is just as expensive, and is harder to manage.

SO….with Smitty not being a surgical candidate, he transferred over to PAWS where he is now under the care of Dr. Riff and her team and will hang out with them for the next two months.  Poor Smitty is pretty painful and not completely thrilled with anyone ‘bout now so President Pam arranged for some spray cheese, cream cheese, and peanut butter to be delivered to PAWS so that Smitty could at the very least, have his choice of what he would like to have his meds hidden in to make them easier to take.
