We are only as good as our word and Indiana is alive this evening because we kept the promise we made to him.
The little boy we have re-named Indiana came into a local shelter and we placed a hold on him as he is a cute, small doxie mix. He was selected to go to a Petco Adoption Event where he found his forever family. Shortly thereafter, Indiana was returned to the shelter after being diagnosed with Parvo.
The shelter reached out to us to ask if we still wanted him even if he had parvo...We were his only way out.
Parvo is often fatal, usually runs us around $5,000 for care (including fluids, isolation, transfusions, etc). We are really not in a place to take on a $5,000 vet bill after welcoming 11 dogs from Puerto Rico just a few days ago, but there was one fact we could not get around - We had placed our hold. We had given our word.
We are not "Doxie - We Are Off The Hook If The Shelter Trumped Our Hold and Took The Dog To Petco, It Got Adopted and Then Came Back With Parvo". We are Dachshund Rescue. We are DRSF. We would rather run the ship ashore doing the right thing than turn away or go back on our word.
Thus, Joanna and her amazing Doxie Taxi Team scrambled and got Indiana from the shelter where he was brought to LeadER (through their isolation entrance), we he is on fluids and we have fingers crossed that we can save him.
It is your generosity and compassion that make it possible for us to say yes, and even more important keep our promises to these little ones who have nobody to come for them but us. Can Indiana count on you for a couple dollars to help him reach his goal?
