Dachshund Rescue South Florida hasn't added a story.
Our DRSF intake team all know when each shelter that we work with closes and we can breathe a tad easier when that hour is near every day. At least there won’t be a shelter emergency (unlike the surrender or found dog emergency). So we are mentally winding down for the day when our intake coordinator’s phone rings and it says “Rescue Office”.
Hearts stop and breathe quickens and the call is answered.
Hi… we have several dogs that have been confiscated due to cruelty headed our way with an animal control officer. There are a couple dachshunds and other small dogs. How many can you take and how fast can you get here? We close in an hour and a half and they can’t stay overnight, they need help now. ... Our answer was, we can take 3 and Pam will be there in 45-60 minutes.
The shelter got to work shaving mats off these little ones and processing them (as they need to being a county shelter) and Pam arrives at the shelter.
The shelter rescue team led her to a room where the 3 dogs are. Two look pretty good, stinky, scared as can be, weird shave jobs where painful mats have been removed, but overall, not too bad.
Then Pam looked to the corner… the third one… her eyes got teary and her heart hurt.
There sat a beautiful girl with the longest nails she had ever seen, mats hanging from all limbs and her underside that were full of feces and then she saw her face… one side had a hole created from a tooth that rotted so badly that it broke through the skin, her ear infections were oozing so badly that there was goo all over the fur of her ears and her eyes… her eyes… it was painful to look at, we cannot even fathom how much it hurts her. One eye, full of goo and the other so red and horrifying looking that there isn’t a guess as to what was happening.
Pam gathered her up as the shelter staff picked up the other 2
and off to the Pambulance they all went.
The healthier two headed to Everglades Animal Hospital and this
little justifiably cranky girl headed to LeadER Animal Specialty
Hospital where Dr. Phillips triaged her and then Dr. Gutierrez took
over her treatment.
What we know so far is that she needs mats removed, needs bloodwork, fluids, pain meds and a surgery consult for her eye. She has no teeth and likely no vision and she’s emaciated.
We will wait on test results and see what the next steps are. All she has known from humans is cruelty and neglect…. DRSF and our community will show her that there is also kindness.
