Dachshund Rescue South Florida hasn't added a story.
A call for help came for the most challenging of requests from a shelter - A bonded pair, senior, one dog with back legs not working.
"Good afternoon - I wanted to reach out to you on behalf of Mia and Scooby, they are a bonded pair that have lived their entire lives together according to their original owner. Their most recent owner passed and the next of kin surrendered the dogs over to us as they could not care for them. It has been noted that Mia has a difficult time mobilizing and does not use her back legs. Our veterinarian noted Dog can’t use back legs and has open sores on its hind quarters area.Dragging both rear legs. No spinal pain noted. Deep pain present on both rear legs. Sores noted on feet and stifles. Suspect old spinal injury and pressure sores. Mia is spayed and Scooby is neutered. They have very sweet dispositions and must go together. If you are able to help them please let me know as soon as possible. Thank you and have a wonderful day!"
This pair was all the way north in Lake County, North of Orlando - nearly 4 hours from us - way out of our area. Surely another group closer by would step up.... we waited, and waited, but nothing. None of the rescues close by were coming for them. The ball was in our court.
As always, we are not "Dachshund Young and Healthy" or "Dachshund Easy Placement" or "Dachshund Only In Our Area" or even "Dachshund we have Foster Homes Coming Our Our Ears Who Take Bonded Senior Pairs Where One Is Paralyzed". (For those who are not familiar - a foster home who will take a bonded pair of seniors who one is paralyzed and likely incontinent is about as easy to come by as a Unicorn....). We are Dachshund Rescue, so rescue we did.
We placed our hold, a transport was organized, and one volunteer offered to drive Miami to Tavares and back in one day to get them - nearly 9 hour trip.
Mia and Scooby were brought to Pet Medical Center of Boca where they were checked out and today, Mia, who still has deep pain, went to see Dr. Reese at Southeast Veterinary Neurology in Boynton to see if we can help her to walk again.
We are not sure why none of the other rescues came for them, but that is between them and the universe. They needed help, we were able to rally to provide help, and no we turn to you, the people who make the help happen to help us cover their care.
As always, even $1 gets us closer to our goal to cover Mia and Scooby's care so that we can continue to be there for the next "Mia and Scooby" who will need our kind of love and care shortly...
