Dachshund Rescue South Florida hasn't added a story.
It is a situation that we have seen played out many times before - 115 times before to be precise.
A little Frenchie boy's story made its way to us. His family had to move and he was sick - he couldn't walk. They knew he needed to see a Dr. but were not able to take him. It sounded like IVDD. He was not a doxie, but there aren't a lot of ways out of a shelter for any dog with IVDD.
Would we take him in?
Ugh...what is the right answer?
We ask our community to fund so many IVDD surgeries for doxies, is it right to ask for help for a Frenchie?
As we have said for so many years now, we would rather run the ship ashore doing the right thing than turn away. We certainly don't want to get into the business of Frenchie rescue, but we know our community will tell us if we did the right thing (and if not, we totally know for the next time)
We said yes, we could be a safe haven for Niko.
Transport was arranged to Southeast Veterinary Neurology where Niko will have an MRI and, hopefully, if he is a candidate, go right to surgery with Dr. De Pompa at SEVN.
We know the questions will come. "Why can't you get him the surgery and then give him back to his family?" We would love nothing more than to be able to do that, and we know this is a totally valid question. We have have the full answer available on our website at https://www.dachshundrescuesouthflorida.com/owner-surrenders.html. It is not our place to decide who and who cannot afford surgery and/or provide the after care. It IS our place to be a safe haven for those in need.
So here we are, asking your support for a little Frenchie boy, who without DRSF, would have found himself in a shelter and his story and tonight instead of being under the care of a world class Veterinary Neurologist, would be sitting in a cold cage, alone and not sure if he was going to make it or not.
We have fingers and paws crossed that our community agrees that his life was worth saving. As always, every single dollar counts toward the funding finish line and makes it possible for us to be a safe haven for those who have nobody else to come for them....
