Dachshund Rescue South Florida hasn't added a story.
President Pam’s morning was started with a heartbreaking plea
for help. It came in the form of a Facebook message and an email.
The message was from a young lady who very much loves her dog, but
is unable to provide her the care she needs. The email asked if she
could surrender her to DRSF.
Pam called the number given and spoke to the owner who knew that
the only option for Penelope to get better was to surrender her to
DRSF, knowing that DRSF would provide her with the best care
available in south Florida.
So far, all we know is that is that it’s an internal medicine
issue and Penelope’s vet said it was imperative that she get
advanced care quickly. So we made it happen quickly. There will be
many tests run before we have an answer, but she is in the very best
of hands at LeadER Animal Specialty Hospital.
These are the types of fundraisers where we get lots and lots of
questions about why we don’t pay for the medical care and then
return the dog to the family that surrendered them. We have answered
these questions before, but thought we would offer up those answers
again since we are sure we will get them here also.
There are more reasons than we could list here why we don’t do
that, but these are the top few:
How would we choose? Who are we to judge who can or can’t afford
veterinary care for their pets? How would we assess that? Ask for
tax returns and a list of their monthly expenses? Judge what they
spend their money on? Who would we get to go through the thousands
of requests we would get?
Between all of our social media platforms and email lists we
have over 250,000 followers. Can you imagine how many requests we
would get in just the first week if we announced that we were now
paying medical bills for pets and then returning them to the owners?
The thought is mind blowing!!
How fast do you think we would be out of money when the constant
pleas for money for owned pets don’t bring in the funds needed to
treat those dogs? When that happened we would then not be able to
help any dogs that need us that don’t have owners.
How do we then say no to the same owners that we helped once
when they come back the next time their dog needs medical care?
Another thing that many don’t consider is that the decision to
surrender is the owners, they reach out to us as a last resort. We
don’t go around encouraging people to give us their sick and injured
dogs. When they contact us, they understand that they are
surrendering and will not be getting the dog back.
The last reason that we are going to put out is that many of the
owners that surrender to us aren’t interested in or are not able to
provide the care that is needed after the dog gets treated for what
they were surrendered for.
There are SO many more reasons, but it’s time to bring our focus
back to Penelope who will always be loved by the owners who
surrendered her, but know she is not where she needs to be to get
the care she needs.
So Penelope is now a part of the DRSF class of 2024 and we,
along with our incredible community, will get her the care she needs
now and for as long into the future as she needs.
This is what we do, provide a soft place to land for dachshunds
in need, no judgement, just loving care.
Let’s all be kind in our comments, while you may not have made
the same decision, it’s not for us to judge, the family made the
decision that they felt was best for them and Penelope.
