Roxy is a 5 year old Pembroke Welsh Corgi. Roxy lived with her breeder for the first three years of her life. When the breeder decided she would no longer breed dogs, Roxy and an older male named Gator were taken in by Tammy Spencer. (Tammy already had Birdie, Roxy's sister.) With the help of Bandit’s K9Care and Corgi Connection of Kansas, all three dogs received full vetting including being spayed and neutered. Birdie and Gator have since been adopted and are living in great forever homes (Birdie in New Jersey and Gator in Kansas).
Tammy's plan was to also find a new home for Roxy. However shortly after being spayed, the area of Roxy's incision became infected and she had to be treated with both oral and topical antibiotics. While being treated for the infection, Roxy had what appeared to be a grand mal seizure. After 2 weeks of treatment the incision site healed, but Roxy experienced more seizure activity so she was put on anti-seizure medication.
Unfortunately the medication did not control the seizures, and in fact they became more frequent. Roxy also developed a head tilt, her eyesight faded, she had difficulty walking and eventually she went down in her back end.
An MRI of the brain was suggested by her vet since the symptoms were primarily neurological. But because funds were limited, it was agreed that Roxy would be treated with steroids and antibiotics, and the seizure medication would be discontinued. This was the basic treatment plan for suspected meningitis, as well as to shrink any possible tumors.
With the new medication, Roxy’s ability to walk improved, and the seizures stopped. However she still had the head tilt, and her eyesight faded to the point that she has become basically blind. Her local vet is unable to do anything more for Roxy without knowing the cause of her continuing symptoms. Roxy has therefore been referred to the University of Missouri (Mizzou) Small Animal Hospital for a consultation with a neurologist, followed by an MRI and spinal tap.
The total cost of the specialist consultation, pre-anesthesia blood
work, MRI, spinal tap and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) analysis is
approximately $4,000. Roxy has already received a generous
contribution of $1,000. This fundraiser will raise the balance needed
for the diagnostics plus medication and follow up visits. And the
ultimate goal is to get Roxy back to full health (and vision) so that
she can live happily in a new forever home.
Thank you for helping this sweet girl!
