❤️ Meet Little Mikey

Mikey isn’t just my beloved companion. He is a trained service dog, my constant sidekick, and one of the smartest, happiest and most loving little dogs you could ever meet.

Mikey has spent his life bringing joy and comfort to people. He visits nursing homes, and he has begun visiting preschool classrooms where children get to meet the real-life star of The Adventures of Little Mikey , his own series of children’s books.

One of my favorite memories is watching Mikey surrounded by preschoolers during a book visit. The children got to meet the little dog they’d just been reading about—and Mikey got to do what he does best: make people smile.

🐾 Mikey truly goes everywhere.

He goes to the beach, rides on boats and kayaks, goes camping, visits stores and even goes to the movies. He’s incredibly well trained and so connected to the people around him that sometimes it’s easy to forget he’s a dog.

He’s family. He’s my companion. And he’s a little ambassador of happiness.

We had plans for many more adventures, children’s books, preschool visits and opportunities to bring Mikey’s joy to others.

Then, almost overnight, everything changed.

💔 Mikey became seriously ill.

What began with gastrointestinal symptoms and lethargy quickly became an emergency. Mikey required hospitalization, extensive bloodwork, ultrasound imaging and specialized diagnostic testing.

After a week and a half of searching for answers, we received the diagnosis we were praying we wouldn’t hear:

Mikey has large-cell lymphoma involving his liver and spleen.

But here’s the amazing part:

Mikey still wants to be Mikey.

He still wants to go outside. He still wants to walk toward the beach. He still looks around for his next adventure and wants to be part of everything happening around him.

His joyful spirit is still there.

His body just needs help.

🙏 Our goal is to give Mikey every reasonable chance we can.

Today, we met with the oncologist at RISE 24-Hour Emergency & Specialty Care in Laguna Niguel to discuss Mikey’s lymphoma diagnosis and treatment options. We learned that in order to give Mikey chemotherapy and a chance at potentially another year of life, his treatment could cost nearly $15,000 . After everything Mikey has already been through, we want to give him every possible chance to fight this. Any support toward his treatment means more to us than we can express.

We hope to proceed with this veterinary oncology care and appropriate traditional cancer treatment while also exploring supportive and integrative veterinary approaches that may help his strength, comfort and quality of life.

The emergency hospitalization, specialty consultations, diagnostics, imaging, medications and supportive care have already cost thousands of dollars.

And now we are entering the next stage: oncology treatment and continued medical care.

We have reached the point where we simply cannot do this alone.
