Katherine Shanks hasn't added a story.
We rescued Wednesday when she was 8 weeks old from a backyard breeder. She has been with us since then and is now 11 months old.
Unfortunately, 12/18 , Wednesday was running across the yard and stepped in a hole, breaking both radius and ulna. She had to have surgery and that, plus xrays and casting, pain meds, etc, cost us $576.
A week and a half later she bolted out the door on Christmas day. It was pouring rain and her entire leg got soaked so we had to take her back to the vet, have her sedated again and resplinted. That cost another $244, with the visit plus stronger tranquilizers and pain meds.
The last week I noticed she was chewing on the splint despite the inflatable collar she's been wearing. I rebandaged her, but I didn't realize that the other vet had wrapped her entire foot under the splint with gauze and not just the top like her normal vet. I removed the wet tape and gauze and the inner layer was dry so I didn't remove the splint because I was afraid of further damaging her leg.
Today I took her back to the vet because she hasn't been eating or wanting to do anything at all for two days and she'd become somewhat aggressive. When they removed the splint we realized that the inside had been both wet and dirty, plus blood because the back of the splint had rubbed her leg raw. Her left front paw is badly infected and necrotic. She is on a much heavier sedative now as well as heavy antibiotics and stronger pain meds, but the necrosis is so bad that it has completely rotted away her pads and one toe which is barely hanging on and the toe on the other side is showing bone through. She will be on the antibiotics over the weekend and Monday we have to take her to have at least one and possibly both toes amputated. I don't have a final total yet, but the vet sent an estimate this morning of $389.
We had an emergency fund, but between the last two vet visits, and todays visit which cost another $256, plus prescriptions for the sedatives and antibiotics and pain meds and the gauze, wound wash, antibiotic cream and wrap I had to buy today, we only have $36 left. We have care credit, but it is maxed out due to a medical emergency 2 months ago and they will not increase our credit line. At this point, I have no way of getting this money. I have applied to several different pet aid grants, but am not likely to hear back but haven't heard anything back. At this point if I can't come up with this money I am going to have to consider putting her down, because I don't know what else to do. I can't let her stay in pain and risk her infection spreading.
If anyone can find it in their heart to help I would appreciate it more than I can possibly begin to explain.
I am happy to provide evidence of the payments already made and the recommendation from our vet visit today regarding the amputation Monday.
