🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉Mahalo to all who are helping!
HOWEVER, we are not done. Every little bit helps because we have other costs to consider.
Help Us Save the Lydgate Beach Cats: Build a Sanctuary to Protect Them
We urgently need your help to save the Lydgate Beach Park cats from being eradicated. Our goal is to create a safe sanctuary for them on private land, and we need $6,000 to purchase and install the cat-safe fencing that will make this possible.
The Situation
Lydgate Beach Park is home to a community of feral and abandoned
cats who have been cared for by dedicated feeders and volunteers.
Unfortunately, the County of Kauai has contracted predator eradication
efforts to protect federally protected bird species, which could
include these cats. While recent press releases have denied immediate
action, the threat remains imminent.
We’ve asked the County for more time, but without confirmation, we must act now to save these cats.
What We’re Doing
Our group, Kitty Cat News Kauai, has secured
space on private agricultural land to build a sanctuary where these
cats can live out their lives safely and humanely. This grassroots
effort is a labor of love by passionate community members stepping up
because no other organization currently can provide this solution.
We are partnering with organizations like Kauai Community Cat Project (KCCP), who have been doing remarkable work to help spay/neuter cats to help keep cat populations under control. We are supporting Kauai Animal Welfare Society (KAWS) and their mission and belief that "every animal on Kaua`i deserves a safe and nurturing home" as well as "to end the practice of euthanasia as a means of population control, instead relying on spay and neuter and trap and return programs, and to create a sanctuary for animals not yet placed in foster or permanent homes."
What We Need
To get started, we need to:
- Purchase cat-safe fencing to create a secure containment area.
- Install the fencing as soon as it arrives.
- Relocate the cats safely to the sanctuary.
- Traps to get the cats out
- Flea meds, dewormer, eye treatment to boost them before placement in new location
- Small Shelters (dog houses, tarps) to help them stay out of the weather
- Shipping fees to fly off island adoptable cats
- The estimated cost for fencing and shipping is $6,000. Once the fence is installed, we’ll begin moving cats who are already spayed/neutered, microchipped, and ear-tipped. Any remaining cats will be trapped and fixed immediately before relocation.
Why This Matters
These cats are friendly, beautiful, and healthy, but they face
daily threats, including abandonment and the County ordinance
prohibiting feeding them on park property. Without intervention, they
may be euthanized as part of the County’s predator control efforts.
This sanctuary not only provides a humane solution but also aligns with federal mandates to protect local wildlife by relocating the cats off park property.
How You Can Help
Your support will directly save cats like Mei Mei, Blue,
Marilyn, Lexi, and many others. Here’s how you can help:
- Donate: Every dollar helps us get closer to building this sanctuary.
- Share: Spread the word to fellow cat lovers, friends, and family.
- Volunteer: Help us with food supplies, fencing installation, or regular feeding shifts.
Together, We Can Make a Difference
We believe in the power of community to create change. With your
help, we can save these cats and create a model sanctuary that could
inspire similar efforts across the island, ensuring the humane
treatment of cats while protecting Kauai’s native wildlife.
Mahalo Nui Loa for supporting this urgent and meaningful project.
MOVING FORWARD: Everything we need, and want to do, hinges on securing fencing for this project. Once that is done, we have a variety of areas we need help in. Please complete this form and let us know if you can help in any of the listed areas.

Frequently Asked Questions
1. Why do the cats need to be relocated?
The cats at Lydgate Beach Park are at risk due to predator
eradication efforts mandated by federal wildlife protection
guidelines. While these efforts aim to protect native bird species,
they pose a significant threat to the park’s community cats.
Relocating the cats to a safe sanctuary ensures their protection while
aligning with conservation goals.
2. What is Kitty Cat News Kauai?
Kitty Cat News Kauai is a grassroots organization of dedicated
community members committed to the well-being of Kauai’s feral and
community cats. Our mission is to unite caretakers, TNR
(trap-neuter-return) providers, rescue groups, and others to create a
safer, happier environment for all cats on the island.
3. What will the sanctuary be like?
The sanctuary will be located on privately owned agricultural
land and designed to provide a safe, secure outdoor environment for
the cats. Cat-safe fencing will keep them contained while allowing
them to live out their lives in a natural, stress-free setting.
4. How will the funds be used?
All donations will go directly toward purchasing and shipping
the cat-safe fencing, which is essential for creating the sanctuary.
Any additional funds will be used to support other sanctuary needs,
such as food, supplies, and temporary housing for the cats during relocation.
5. Are the cats spayed or neutered?
Yes! Approximately 85–90% of the cats at Lydgate Beach Park are
already spayed, neutered, microchipped, and ear-tipped. Any remaining
unfixed cats will be trapped and sterilized before being relocated to
the sanctuary.
6. Why do you need donations? Doesn’t the County provide funding?
We are not receiving any funding from the County for this
project. This is a volunteer and donation-driven effort to save these
cats. Your contributions are crucial to making this sanctuary a reality.
7. What happens if more cats are abandoned at the park?
Sadly, dumping cats is a common issue across the island. Once
the sanctuary is established, we will work with County staff to
quickly trap and relocate any additional cats that are abandoned at
Lydgate Beach Park.
8. Can I help in other ways besides donating?
Yes! Here are some ways to get involved:
- Donate food or supplies.
- Volunteer to help with fence installation, brush clearing, or weekly feeding shifts.
- Spread the word by sharing our campaign with friends and family.
9. What will happen to the sanctuary cats long-term?
Any cats not adopted out to families who want them will live out
their lives at the sanctuary, cared for by dedicated volunteers. Over
time, as the sanctuary cats naturally reach the end of their
lifespans, space will open for other cats who need rescue from
dangerous situations.
10. What happens if the goal isn’t met?
We are committed to saving these cats, even if the goal isn’t
fully reached. Any funds raised will go toward purchasing as much
fencing as possible to get started. Every donation, no matter the
size, makes a difference.
11. Can I visit the sanctuary?
For the safety of the cats and to respect the privacy of the
landowners, the sanctuary’s location will remain private. However, we
plan to share updates, photos, and progress reports with our
supporters so you can see the impact of your generosity.
