Sketchers was born in our backyard and quickly decided he belonged with us. He got his name because he was always underfoot just like a pair of shoes. From day one, he’s been part of our little family. He's our son's constant companion, our quiet comfort on hard days, and our playful goofball on good ones.
A few days ago, we almost lost him.
We found Sketchers collapsed cold, barely breathing, and completely lethargic. We rushed him to the emergency vet, where they found a severe urinary blockage. He was borderline cardiac arrest when we got there. He was hospitalized for 4.5 days, had a catheter placed, and underwent life saving procedures. The vet said we got him there just in time.
His total bill was just under $6,000, and he’s now been diagnosed with FLUTD (Feline Lower Urinary Tract Disease) a lifelong condition. He’ll need prescription food forever, regular vet checkups (every two weeks for the next few months), labs, pain medicine and antibiotics to treat ongoing infection.
We are a low income family, and our son has complex medical needs that require 24/7 care. While we’re used to doing hard things and making ends meet, this emergency caught us off guard. We simply weren’t prepared for such a sudden and massive expense especially not with continuing follow-ups and specialized care on top.
