Please Help Us Give Shady a Chance
Twenty-eight days ago, Shady arrived at BENCHS desperately needing help. I will never forget meeting her for the first time. When I wrapped my arms around her, her skin felt paper thin beneath my hands. The smell of infection was overwhelming. It clung to my clothes. It lingered on my hands long after I put her down. Her feet were covered in painful sores. Her tail hung limp behind her. It hurt to move. It hurt to be touched. It hurt to exist. And yet she never growled. She never resisted. She simply let me carry her.
When we brought her inside, the full extent of her suffering became impossible to ignore. Most of her fur was gone. Her skin was bright red, inflamed, and covered in scabs and infection. Her ears were painfully infected. Every inch of her body looked uncomfortable. Every movement seemed to hurt.
For days, Shady did little more than hide beneath a blanket. She would curl herself into the smallest ball possible and disappear underneath the fabric, as if she hoped the world would forget she was there. She slept. She hid. She endured. When staff reached out to comfort her, she would flinch and whimper. Her body was so raw and painful that even the gentlest touch hurt.
What we do know is that when she arrived at BENCHS, she had almost nothing left to give. But somehow, despite everything, she still trusted us. So we promised her that her story would not end this way.
Since arriving at BENCHS, Shady has undergone extensive medical treatment. Diagnostics, skin testing, medications, antibiotics, parasite treatment, ear treatments, medicated baths, and countless hours of care from staff who refused to let her suffer. Slowly, little by little, Shady began to heal. Tiny hairs began growing where bare skin once existed. The angry redness started fading. The wounds began closing. The dog hidden beneath months, and perhaps years, of pain slowly began to emerge.
For the first time, she started seeking out attention instead of shrinking away from it. She began greeting staff with soft eyes and cautious curiosity. The fear that once seemed to consume her every movement slowly gave way to moments of comfort, trust, and hope. Each small step forward felt like a victory, a reminder that healing is possible when someone is finally given the care they deserve.
On the ninth day, something happened that none of us will ever forget. She wagged her tail.
The staff who witnessed that moment looked at each other and cried.
For most dogs, a wagging tail is ordinary. For Shady, it was a miracle. It was the first sign that beneath all the pain, fear, and suffering, her spirit was still there. It was a tiny movement that meant everything.
Then came another devastating diagnosis. Shady tested positive for heartworm disease.
Just as she was beginning to feel better, we learned that her biggest battle was still ahead of her. Heartworm disease is serious, expensive, and time consuming to treat. It requires months of medication, strict activity restriction, veterinary monitoring, and specialized care. We estimate that Shady's medical journey will continue for another 6 to 12 months before she can finally be considered recovered.
Today, we are asking our community to continue that compassion.
Our goal is to raise $5,000 to help offset the cost of the extensive medical care Shady has already received and the heartworm treatment she still desperately needs. The reality of animal sheltering is that dogs like Shady do not come with funding attached. The veterinary bills still have to be paid. The medications still have to be purchased. The treatment still has to continue.
Twenty-eight days ago, Shady arrived exhausted, uncomfortable, and hurting. Today, her fur is growing back. Her skin is healing. Her eyes are brighter. She no longer spends her days hiding beneath a blanket. She is beginning to believe that people can be kind.
Her story is not one of neglect. It is the story of a dog whose medical needs eventually exceeded what one person could provide. Her owner loved her deeply and did everything he could to care for her, but the care she required became greater than any one person could manage. When Shady needed more help than he could give, she found her way to BENCHS, and now it is our turn as a community to help carry the burden and give her the future she deserves.
Please donate if you can. Please share if you cannot.
Because Shady has already fought so hard to survive.
Now she deserves the chance to truly live. Help us reach our $5,000 goal and be part of writing the next chapter of Shady's story.
