Chase’s Road to Recovery
The problem
We adopted Chase from a shelter not long ago, and he has quickly
become part of our family. He’s a happy, active dog who loves hiking,
and we had just come back from a two-mile hike together. Then he
fractured three bones in his right front paw. We don’t know how it
happened. An emergency vet splinted him right away, and the ER visit
alone cost just over $4,000. Now he’s stuck resting while his body
heals, and my girls and I miss our walks, our playtime, and our hikes
with him.
The solution
Surgery was quoted at about $7,000, and it isn’t an option for
us. Instead, Chase is being treated with splinting and bandaging.
He’ll go in once a week at first, then every two weeks. After a month,
we’ll recheck his x-rays and decide the next steps together. We are
actually looking into see if we can rebandage ourselves to help keep
costs low even more.
The barrier
This route is the more affordable one, but it still isn’t cheap.
Each visit costs $222.75+ (before taxes), depending on whether Chase
needs to be sedated. Over the full course of treatment, we expect the
total to be $3,000 to $5,000, on top of the $4000+ ER bill. I’m a stay
at home mom working part time at a nonprofit, and I can’t cover this
alone. Splinting also carries a higher risk of reinjury than surgery
would. That makes every visit and every bandage change important, so
we can’t afford to miss any.
How you can be the hero
Every dollar goes directly to Chase’s care: bandage changes,
splints, sedation, and x-rays.
- $25 helps cover supplies for a bandage change.
- $100 covers about a quarter of a vet visit.
- $300 pays for a full visit.
Your gift keeps Chase’s appointments on schedule and helps him heal safely, so he can get back to hiking with us.

See all activity210/6/2026 - Chase has since seen the specialist for his paw after the ER visit. They highly recommend getting surgery but my husband Lance has said he will not pay for it and I cannot afford that route. So we will be going the splinting and bandaging route.
10/15/26 - Chase went to visit the vet again for a splint change. We talked with them about seeing if we can do the changes ourselves to save money. They told us we need to wait for the specialist to see if they're willing to let us take the reins. Prayings/fingers crossed/good vibes that we can take over to help keep costs down. This last visit was nearly $400 ($355.53)💀
10/19/26 - Specialist saw Chase. Frustratingly they don't want to give us the green light to do bandage/splint change at home. For some reason they also added 2x a week instead of the 1x a week like they had originally told me. They are working with me to lower fees which allowed us to get out just under $200. However, that still doesn't change the fact that they still want to continue and at some point, maybe tomorrow, will be doing x-rays.
10/21/26 - I have things happening personally that I cannot share a ton of details of but basically I am being withheld from funds and so its of the utmost importance that I get all the help I can for funding for Chase. I can't express how much I hate being placed in this position. I am working at trying to get another job to help cover costs. I did raise the goal to 3k to help cover the costs I've incurred already in order to give me some buffer for future expenses for Chase. I am stressing out as I'm being put in a position to have to make some extremely hard choices that I shouldn't have to.
10/22/26 - 4th visit. Dew claw is getting infected and the spot above the splint is creating a bit of a sore. We got prescribed antibiotics. This visit was over $200. Doesn't feel good especially because they still want us doing 2x a week.
10/26/26 - Our what I believe our 5th visit. Everything is looking good. The only bad thing is that they still want me coming in 2x a week. This is extremely frustrating. Today was $175 but this is adding up quickly. My last visit was over $200 as we had to get antibiotics.
