From Zeus's owner: Zeus became part of our family on August 6th. He
was a normal, healthy, energetic puppy. On Thursday August 26th he
went to the vet for his regular puppy shots and a general check up. He
came home acting completely normal and crazy as usual. Thursday night
he threw up. Friday he threw up all day and stopped eating and
drinking. By Saturday I took him to an emergency vet. They gave him
fluids and told me it was just a vaccine reaction. On Sunday he perked
up in the morning and ate a bit. Then afternoon time hit and he
starting throwing up again and was completely lethargic.
I rushed him to his vet Monday morning and they ran some tests
and diagnosed him with Leptospirosis. His kidney and liver levels were
off the charts. Our property had been flooded during heavy rains and
we suspect that it is the reason he was exposed to the disease. They
told me to take him to the ICU for round the clock care, which I did.
Zeus has beaten all odds and is on his way to recovery, but his
bill now exceeds $13,000. (Invoice from 3 days ago included in
photos.) He is currently on IV fluids (3x the normal amount) because
his kidneys are putting out more urine than he is taking in fluids so
without the IV he would become dehydrated and die. He is also being
syringe fed because he cannot handle eating right now. The hospital is
saying he still needs a couple of days before he can be weaned off of
IV fluids.
I had no idea when we brought him in that the cost of his care
would get so high. I put down $3,800 which was their initial estimate,
and that used up my care credit. I did a personal fundraiser which
brought in about $2,500 more, but that still leaves us many thousand
short of what we need. I am a single mother with 3 children, one
which has an autoimmune/auto-inflammatory disease, so I work from home
with limited income. That is why I reached out to Bandit's BandAid to
help us with his bill. My children love their puppy so much, and he
deserves a chance to have a long, happy life. We would be so grateful
for any help with his hospitalization.
