Figgy's Chritmas Wish! Cottontail Cottage Animal Sanctuary recently took in three, baby potbellied pigs. They are adorable beyond words. However, one of the sibling pigs, "Fig", is in dire shape due to the fact that he has inguinal hernias - a life-threatening condition that requires immediate surgery. Figgy also appears to have a deviated septum and has trouble breathing. The little girl pig, "Loveday," needs to be spayed ASAP, as there is a small window for surgery as it can be dangerous due to not only their high sensitivity to anesthesia, but the greater risk involved with increased weight gain. Females can also become pregnant at the age of three months (which they are now.) Unspayed pigs are highly prone to various reproduction cancers.
We are very concerned about Figgy. He appears weaker than the others and without surgery will die a very painful death. We have consulted with different vets throughout the state that deal specifically with potbelly pigs and have settled on the wonderful, Dr. Miles, who has vast "pig experience." The earliest the surgery for Figgy and Loveday can happen, is on Christmas Eve (a four-hour, round trip for us.) This would mean leaving our children and family on Christmas Eve. It also means raising $600 dollars - FAST! We've got the go ahead from our wonderful daughters who say this is what Christmas is all about - now we need the go ahead from you! Please help us raise the much need funds to save Figgy's life and prolong Lovedays.
Our plan was to wait to take in pigs. It has always been our big dream to put in a potbelly pig preserve on our land. We have already designated where this would be: a piece of old pasture and woodland crossed by a creek, where the pigs could root to their hearts desire and splash about in the water. Our thought was to spend the winter devising plans. The plight of potbelly pigs is a sad one due to the fact that they are bought with the presumption that they will stay small. As the pigs start to grow bigger and bigger they are no longer considered "cute," and as is too often the case, become victims of abandonment, neglect and abuse. Only 2-5% of pet pigs remain in one home during the course of their lifetime, a problem that we attribute to unethical breeding practices, poor information/lack of education, and the novelty of owning a pet pig.
