From Mochi’s owners: Mochi is our beloved Corgi, and she is so much more than just a pet to us. She is family, our companion, and a little bundle of happiness who has brought so much love into our lives. She has such a bright personality and so much life left to live, which makes it heartbreaking to see her going through something so painful.
We started to notice that something wasn’t right with Mochi in the middle of the week. We took her to the emergency veterinary hospital where we live in Fresno. They put her on rest and medication, and told us if she didn’t improve in the next day or so, she would need to go to a specialty hospital that has a neurosurgeon. We were told that she probably had a herniated disc caused by Intervertebral Disc Disease (IVDD), a condition that affects the spine and can cause severe pain and difficulty moving.
By Friday she had not improved, and in fact was no long able to walk on her back legs. Unfortunately the specialty hospital in Fresno no longer has a neurologist, and some specialty hospitals in the region could not take us until at least the following Monday. We did find a hospital in Concord, about 2 hours away, that told us they had a neurologist working all day so we headed over.
However, when we arrived we were informed that the specialist had to leave early to go out of town. They recommended another 24 hour facility which was able to take us. But there we learned that the MRI and disc surgery would be an estimated $15,000 to $18,000. We opted to do the MRI to confirm the diagnosis, but we could not afford the surgery. The MRI alone cost us $5,200.
A herniated disc was confirmed, and thankfully Mochi still had some feeling in her back legs. We were also told that she needed surgery as soon as possible or she might lose her ability to walk again.
The amount needed for surgery is an overwhelming amount for us, but we are determined to do everything we can to get her the care she needs. We reached out for help because we love Mochi with all our hearts, and we don’t want to give up on her. A friend suggested we talk to Bandit’s K9Care, and they offered to help by putting up this fundraiser and helping us locate the best hospital for the surgery.
Every donation, no matter how small, will help us get closer to covering the cost of her surgery and giving her the opportunity to recover. If you are unable to donate, sharing her story would mean just as much to us. From the bottom of our hearts, thank you for taking the time to read Mochi’s story, for keeping her in your thoughts, and for helping us fight for our sweet girl.
