Ibizan Hound Rescue rehomes, rehabilitates and rescues one of the most abused breeds of dogs in Europe, the Spanish Podenco (or Ibizan hound). This one of the groups of dogs, along with the Spanish galgo that are bred at will and often disposed of without care, forethought and sometimes with great cruelty.

We started rescuing podencos (pods) 12 years ago when we created Ibizan Hound Rescue and registered both as a charity, and a certified rescue centre.

The Podencos arrive into us many ways, sometimes they are simply lost from the pack and end up wandering until found, or pups found by accident, or they can be injured and need vet attention. But almost every time they are all desperately underweight, very hungry and will show some level of fear of both the world and humans.

Rehabilitation can take time, so patience is required to bring these highly intelligent and beautiful dogs back to a level of trust that both they and we can live with, and during this time we feed and vet them. We have always done this at our and the rescue’s own cost. The dogs are kept within our own home until ready and then we then find homes in mainland Europe, the UK, USA and Canada. Some will just never move on because they could not learn to trust again.

The increased number of dogs we take for rehab and rehoming means we have run out of safe storage for their food and we have to open up and secure further areas of land for them spend time. Podenco fencing does need to be high and is not cheap, we just don’t have the money to proceed with both storage and fencing.

So we are calling on the Podenco community, and those who adore these beautiful dogs to help us achieve these two goals. We need to raise €4100 by end of July 2019 so we can complete the work. So please help us to continue to help them.
