We would like to illustrate the life of a feral, homeless cat. This
is the story of Elly, a female feral homeless cat:
Elly: "I am a feral cat. My mother might have been a feral,
stray, or even a house cat who gave birth to me, my sister, and my two
brother siblings in a gutter away from humans. My siblings and I are
unknown to humans and are very scared of humans. My mother took care
of us for 8 weeks, and then we needed to care for ourselves. It was
tough. My mother became pregnant again and had to take care of her
newborn kittens. Some mice were in the place where we lived, and we
ate birds. But we struggled to catch them because we were small and
barely survived. When I was 5 months old, my sister and I got pregnant
for the first time by our brothers. We had to take care of our kittens
since they were weak due to inbreeding, and soon, the kittens became
independent of sorts, and I got pregnant again and again. Sometimes,
from my kittens of 5 months and older. I am 3 years old and have given
birth to over 40 kittens. I have so much pain now. The place where we
live does not have mice anymore; we only must survive on birds. I am
hungry and sick. Since no one of us is vaccinated against the common
cat viruses, we have an outbreak of Feline immunodeficiency Virus,
Herpes Virus, and Calici Virus. These are terrible viruses. Our colony
is so much inbreeded, and some cats have disabilities. My tung and
eyes are so sore, and I struggle to breathe due to these viruses. We
are scratching from the ticks and fleas. It is itching a lot, and I
cannot stop scratching, but I don't always have the energy to scratch.
We struggle to find food in dustbins, anything to give us energy for
the day and to fill our stomachs for a while—something to make us feel
better. My sister was hit by a car while trying to find some food. I
am getting o cold now at night and when it rains. Our lives are tough,
and I am suffering. I am so skinny. Imagine if a human with a good
heart would help us with some food and a better life without viruses
and the pain of giving birth to kittens again and again…. "
