Sometimes life has a way of testing you when you least expect it. The last month has been absolutely heartbreaking. On September 25th, I unexpectedly lost my sweet Lily. Although she had been diagnosed with cancer, she was doing well, and we had no idea we were about to lose her. Then, just three weeks later, on October 17th, I lost my Graycie after a kidney failure diagnosis. Between the costs of Graycie’s care and the heartbreak of losing both girls, I was struggling to catch my breath. They had been our world for 11 years, and the hole in our hearts and the quietness in our home were unbearable. That’s why, just one week after losing Graycie, we opened our hearts and home to a little Bichon puppy we named Birdie Banana. We knew we weren’t ready to replace our girls, but we also knew there were so many dogs who needed loving homes. Birdie brought a little light back into our home when we needed it most.
We never imagined that just FOUR DAYS after bringing her home, we’d be fighting for her life.
Birdie initially developed what appeared to be an upper respiratory infection. I immediately took her to our veterinarian, where she was treated with antibiotics and supportive care. Unfortunately, she continued to get worse rather than better. Her breathing became increasingly concerning, and we ultimately had to rush her to the emergency veterinary hospital.
What we thought would be a routine puppy illness had progressed into contagious bacterial pneumonia. Birdie needed hospitalization, oxygen support, and intensive veterinary care.
She’s still fighting, and we’re holding on to every bit of progress. After a rough first night of hospitalization, she had some encouraging signs on night two, including eating a little and showing slight improvement, but she continues to struggle with her breathing and needs oxygen support. We’re taking things one day at a time and praying she gets strong enough to come home.
Unfortunately, along with the emotional stress of watching our tiny girl struggle, we’ve been hit with an overwhelming financial burden. Her emergency hospitalization and treatment have already resulted in a veterinary bill estimated around $7,000, and that total will likely continue to grow.
The rescue provided 30 days of complimentary pet insurance, which we were incredibly grateful for. However, our claim has been denied because the insurance company is considering her illness pre-existing due to being surrendered to the rescue with kennel cough.
I never imagined I’d be asking for help so soon after bringing Birdie home one week ago. I adopted her because she deserved a chance at a happy, healthy life, and I want nothing more than to give her that chance.
If you’re able to contribute toward Birdie’s medical expenses, any amount would mean more than I can possibly express. If donating isn’t possible, sharing her story, sending prayers, and keeping our little girl in your thoughts would mean just as much.
Every little bit helps us get one step closer to bringing Birdie home, where she belongs.
Thank you from the bottom of our hearts for caring about our sweet Birdie Banana. ❤️🐾
