Meet Greycie: Our Emotional Anchor in a Storm
Greycie is a beautiful, gentle 5-year-old Domestic Longhair gray tabby who quite literally chose our family.I have lived in my home for nearly a decade, an area continuously flooded with abandoned and stray community cats. Back in August 2021, while I was heavily focused on providing around-the-clock hospice care for my senior cat of 12 years, Indy, a tiny, terrified fluffy cat with big green eyes snuck onto my porch for food. For months, she hid out in a dilapidated garage next door, so terrified of the neighborhood cats that she would freeze in fear. I carved out time every single day to sit in that leaky garage with her, building a dry bed of blankets and earning her trust ounce by ounce. The day she finally finished eating, turned around, and laid her tiny body right against my leg, my heart was hooked.
Determined to give her the best life, I tried to rehome her to someone I thought I could trust, over two hours away. But within 24 hours of the drop-off, the adopter carelessly let her escape and showed zero interest in finding her. Devastated, I spent a week drafting flyers and drove hours back to that unfamiliar neighborhood. On a freezing November night, alone in the dark with a flashlight and a live trap, I opened a can of food on the back patio. In that exact moment of defeat, I felt something soft brush against my leg. It was her.
Right then and there, the universe made the decision for me: this wasn't someone else's cat. This was my cat. She had found me twice in a massive world, and she has been a permanent part of our family ever since.
The Current Storm & Our Heartbreaking Reality
To understand why keeping Greycie safe means the absolute world to us, you have to know what our little family is walking through right now. We are in the depths of an incredibly dark storm. As a single mom in a single-income household with no outside support, my world was completely upended this past year by an intense personal mental health journey that required an extended medical leave, which was instantly followed by a sudden layoff from my longtime job.
While navigating that severe financial and emotional strain, our hearts completely shattered on June 10th when we had to say goodbye to our beloved cat, Floofy, freeing him from his pain. Having just buried him on June 12th, an unexpected health crisis with Greycie just one week later felt completely unbearable.
Amidst this compounding grief, I am raising my amazing 13-year-old son, Jacob. Jacob navigates autism, ADHD, and PTSD, and we are currently fighting through a severe, year-long mental health crisis with him. Through all this trauma and hardship, Jacob has kept moving forward largely because of the unconditional bond he shares with his cats. Floofy anchored him until his final breaths, and the moment he passed, Greycie immediately stepped up to carry that heavy emotional weight, keeping Jacob grounded and bringing peace to our home.
Then, on Thursday, June 18, Greycie had an acute health crisis. Her muscles were intensely spasming, she was in extreme discomfort, and she was so frightened she darted from one hiding place to another. When I was finally able to rush her to Banfield Pet Hospital, Dr. Becker discovered she has a heart murmur.
This diagnosis created an immediate, agonizing roadblock. The veterinary team explained that before they can safely investigate, diagnose, or treat her painful muscle spasms, they must map out her heart condition first. We cannot safely give her medications or relief for her acute side issues without these vital heart tests to ensure her body can handle it.
Because I am laid off, I emptied my bank account and spent my last penny—$449.75 out of pocket—just to cover her initial exam and critical cardiac bloodwork. But I have absolutely nothing left. I could not afford the remaining $605.59 needed for her vital chest X-rays and specialist radiograph consultation.
A Note on the Urgency & Passing Time
If you look at the calendar, you will notice that a chunk of time has already passed since that emergency visit. I know using words like "critical" or "urgent" might feel contradictory given that delay, but it reflects the brutal reality of our daily life. Providing intensive, around-the-clock care for Jacob during his ongoing mental health crisis became its own physical roadblock. Managing his trauma while watching Greycie spend her days deteriorating in hiding added an unbearable amount of stress to our home. I simply did not have the hours or the emotional bandwidth to launch this page sooner. Her need for these tests is still just as life-threatening today as it was on day one—I am just finally finding the air to breathe to ask for help.
How You Can Help Keep My Family Whole
We refuse to give up on Greycie, but we are entirely out of options. Because of my layoff status, I have been completely denied for every alternative veterinary financing loan option available. This campaign is our absolute last hope.
I honestly don't know who relies on Greycie more—myself or my son. But I know with absolute certainty that neither of us has the emotional strength left to withstand another devastating loss right now.
If you are able to donate—even a single dollar—you are directly helping to save the animal that is keeping my son and me emotionally whole. Your kindness will help us finish her diagnostic tests so we can finally treat her pain and help our stretched family survive this crisis. If you cannot contribute financially, please consider sharing Greycie's link to help spread our story.
Thank you from the bottom of our hearts for standing by Greycie, Jacob, and me during the hardest season of our lives.
