Wild at Life e.V. hasn't added a story.
Eva the Lioness
If you have been following Wild at Life e.V. for a while, you might remember Eva from the South African canned hunting farm rescue back in 2021. To briefly summarize for the newer supporters: after rescuing ten lions who were destined to be canned hunted in 2019, the Wild at Life e.V. team found four lions on the same farm who were rescued out two years later once travel restrictions were lifted.
Those four lions are Georges (the lion with the crooked tail), Julie, Elma, and Eva (lionesses). Since the rescue, the pride of four has been living together at the Bela Bela sanctuary in South Africa which offers lush, tall grass, an array of trees that offer shade and enrichment, and most importantly, a life away from bullets.
Unfortunately, Eva was being bullied and ostracised by the others, probably because she is the youngest in the pride. So for her safety, she was transferred to live with Christian, a 15-year-old lion who lost his partner to old age. After witnessing Eva and Christian bonding well, the team was relieved to know that both prides are flourishing and days at Bela Bela could go on smoothly.
Until we saw three cubs with Eva and Christian one morning…
Although the cubs and mother Eva are healthy, Christian was seen committing infanticide, an act not uncommon in the wild too. That, coupled with the fact that Eva is a young, inexperienced mother, prompted the decision to transfer all three cubs out who are now being taken care of by the sanctuary professionals.
Eva’s pregnancy came as a surprise to all of us. But with Christian’s vasectomy done 12 years ago, it is probable that a natural recanalisation happened and made him fertile again. However, as Christian is old, we do not want to risk putting him under the knife and anaesthesia again to go through another vasectomy. Therefore, having Eva - who is young and has no underlying health conditions - undergoing a hysterectomy is a wiser option.
Süleyman the Giraffe
Süleyman is a young giraffe Wild at Life e.V. rescued just last month. He was found lying on his motionless mother for two days, waiting for her to come back to life after being shot by poachers. The Wild at Life e.V. team waited with him during those two days, hoping a relative from his herd would come for him.
As that did not happen, Süleyman was rescued and brought to Bela Bela sanctuary where when he grows older, will be moved and integrated with the other resident giraffes.
Our goal is to raise 3,000€ which will be distributed to
- Eva’s hysterectomy operation
- Building of the enclosure for the lion cubs (that will house them until they reach 6 months of age)
- Larger enclosure for Süleyman
