The secondhand dog rescue hasn't added a story.
Our founder Wendy turns 54 in October and is hoping you can make her birthday wishes come true! Will you spare or share? There are so many dumped puppies and dogs recently
Can you help our founder make her birthday wishes come true?
This is her story:
Wendy has been involved with dogs as a professional for going on 30 years. She started out working with family pets at a young age and got into training and obedience and then raised 10 guide dog pups, worked in large and small kennels, daycares, service dog training programs
When she was working in a kennel back in 2006 as a kennel manager, a dog was never picked up and she ended up taking her home and found a new home for her. Wendy really enjoyed that and at the kennel where she worked at they had recently partnered with a veterinarian and the vet assistant/technician in training had her own rescue she had started. She was more into cats than dogs so Wendy took on finding dogs a home and she did the cats.
In 2012 Wendy moved from where she had started doing rescue back to the Rochester NY area to be closer to her family. She did this by getting a job working for a chain pet store down where she used to live so that she could transfer up to Rochester without having to start a new job. Between the time she moved back and 2014 she still worked remotely doing rescue with the friends she had downstate and she decided to incorporate her own rescue. That’s when the Secondhand dog rescue was born and Wendy has turned over her retirement funds from her previous jobs to save dogs
She has rescued and placed close to 5000 dogs through her personal rescue efforts and she shares her home with all sorts of dogs in their journey to forever homes. She is lucky that others in the area share her vision and counts on many fosters and is always looking for more to join the team to help even more.
It’s not possible to continue her mission without help.
If you can spare something please do, if not please share this fundraising effort
Thank you from Wendy Weisberg and the secondhand dog rescue family
We have pups undergoing treatment for mange and other dogs who finished heartworm treatment
We need help with all the bills please help
This year has been the worst in recent recollection for people
dumping dogs right and left. We have helped just this year over 400
dogs including multiple dogs who require major orthopedic surgeries.
Also other dogs who were very ill who despite massive vet bills and
surgeries did not survive as their previous local homes did not take
care of their needs in a timely manor
For example
we lost 2 local dogs to complications from their illnesses that cost us over 3000$ for both of them
They were in loving foster/adoptive homes when they passed but it was very emotional for our volunteers and we can’t help but wonder what could have been if their owners had taken care of their needs in a more timely manner.
Luffy was a middle aged golden who came to us with untreated pneumonia, heartworm and thyroid issues. We tried so hard to save her but she unfortunately passed away in the arms of her foster at the emergency vet in Syracuse.
we also had Snowy whose owner passed away and we took her in and she had undiagnosed diabetes, mammary tumor and advanced dental disease.
both senior girls had never been spayed we did surgery for Snowy and she still had complications and passed away.
both dogs if treated when they still were Still with their previous owners probably would have had a better chance of making it
we also have Muffie a local surrender who is paralyzed in her hind end and had not been given therapy
We found a great home for Muffie willing to help care for her therapy needs
we had cherry and valentine who both were hit by cars and we tried to save both dogs legs.
cherry unfortunately had to have her leg amputated but Valentine’s leg has been saved. Both procedures are over 6000 each
Both found loving homes
Herman who is a senior mix needed heartworm treatment and a tplo surgery
his surgery was in July when his heartworm cleared
Bella was a local dog who has cost us over 20,000$ Her owner was murdered in Greece in December of 2020
she had 6 surgeries including a dual tplo
she’s now revived and ready for a new home after a long year of treatments
we also had a puppy Walter who needed 2 emergency blood transfusions because he was dumped with a very large number of intestinal worms.
all together just these 8 dogs have drained the rescues resources by 45,000$
We also have taken on a cat with a crushed pelvis plus some very senior dogs from the community and shelters
We need help!
