🐾THESE CATS ON THE CROATIAN COAST NEED YOUR HELP !🐾
My heart aches every time I visit my loved ones in Croatia. The sight of stray and suffering cats in Vodice, a city without its own shelter, is a constant source of worry.
I reach out to the nearest shelter, but they're stretched thin. The need for help is overwhelming, and I know I can't save them all alone.
That's why I'm determined to make a difference. My dream is to honor the memory of Fomle, my first rescue cat. By building Fomle's foundation, a large animal shelter in Vodice. This foundation will be a lifeline for countless cats in need.
🧡
I opened my heart and home to multiple special needs kittens from the shelter in Šibenik.
These are the little ones that often get overlooked – many of mine were blinded, sadly, some were just too far gone when they arrived. They had been starving for so long, they wouldn't make it.
Thankfully, those saved in time are now flourishing! They're living happy and healthy lives.
🧡
🐾A Two-Part Solution for Every Cat:🐾
Fomle's foundation will have two sections, catering to the
specific needs of different feline residents:
- Freedom with Care: The open shelter will provide a safe place for feral cats. Here, they can roam freely, with ample food, water, and cozy spots to rest. Crucially, a trap-neuter-return (TNR) program will ensure their population is controlled.
- Hope for a Forever Home: The closed shelter will house younger cats, injured cats requiring special attention (like blind kitties), and those friendly enough for adoption. All cats will be healthy and spayed/neutered before finding their forever homes.
- Over time, we'll implement a dedicated socialization program for the friendlier feral cats in the open shelter. Through gentle interaction, positive reinforcement, and plenty of patience, we'll help these cats overcome their fear of humans and prepare them for a new life.
A better life awaits
Imagine a world away from the chaos. Tucked away on a peaceful parcel of land that I've been fortunate enough inherited from my dad, just outside Vodice. This calm environment, far from the hustle and bustle of the city, will provide the purrfect sanctuary for them to heal, play, and live a stress-free life.
Building the Dream Together
With a helping hand from others who share my passion, this dream can become reality.
Fomle's foundation can't become a reality without the support of compassionate individuals like you. If you'd like to contribute to giving these deserving cats a second chance, please consider donating to our foundation.
All donations, regardless of size, will be of great help. Your support will be used to:
Give cats food, water and veterinary care and provide a safe and loving home🧡
⚠️DID YOU KNOW?
Common eye infections are the leading cause of blindness in stray cats. The se infections are treatable and often inexpensive, but left unchecked, they can cause a slow and painful death. Sadly, many strays don't receive the care they need .
THE STORY 🦊🐾
Fomle was was my first rescue cat.
I found her on a small island in Croatia. Where she and her siblings lived outside a small seasonal bakery in the summer of 2016.
Later I
found out that this was the home of the majority of the stray
cats on island Prvić Šepurina. In the years that followed I adopted
another stray cat from the exact same spot. His name was Luci and
there will eventually be a story about him as well
Back to Fomle ..
The owners at the bakery gave them leftover bread and water.
Fomle was in very bad shape. She was so tiny! 4 times the size
of her siblings.
Her little body could fit inside my palm. She had no functioning
eyes and a serious eye infection that had gone to far. Her fur was
extremely dirty and she had bold spots.
She was hiding under a table to seek shade, it was sumner and it was 35 degrees outside... This was my first week after moving from Norway to Croatia back in 2016.
I didn't know what to do, but I knew that I had to help.
On that day, the moment I got off the local ferry I walked straight to the local vet. And I got medications for her and the siblings.
Her siblings where in much better shape but also they clearly had problems with their eyes. One of them was already blinded at one eye, but you could see that the other eye was still healthy but with an active infection. The third had a healthy eye but with a beginning infection in the other.
Next day I went to the island again.
I remember I had with me both antibiotics tablets and eye cream with antibiotics. I crushed the tablets and mixed it in the food. The siblings ate. But Fomle, didn't..
She was so small and weak no bigger than the size of my palm.
I knew I had to help her further and bring her with me on the ferry. She desperately needed to see the vet in order to hopefully save her life.
The veterinary didn't know if she would make it, but they wished me good luck and to keep them updated. She got a few injections and she went home with me to my dad's hosue in Vodice, Croatia.
From that moment Fomle was adopted. Already few hours after the
injections she was looking better and she even had a little bit of
food. We still didn't know if she would make it.
But in a surprisingly short time we could already see that it was going the right way and she was recovering.
She was a fighter! She was always a fighter!
At the same time I continued to visit the island to give her siblings medication.
After less than two months in her new home Fomle's eye had begun to rot. Otherwise her recovery was going amazingly. But the eye was clearly annoying her. More and more puss came out and she did not enjoy the constant cleaning.
It was time for another visit to the vet where she got the eye surgical removed. The second eye was okey for now. Also blinded but it wasn't necessary to remove it quite yet.
She was looking so cute. Like a little pirate with a grape eye. That was her nickname for a while. It was the exact same color and size as the grapes that were growing at our balcony.
Once again she recovered. And she supprised all of us! She was just like a "normal" kitten. She was so playful, so happy and full of life. And her blindness did not stop her!
Oh no, she was wild and firce and she walked around as if she wasn't blinded. It was absolutely amazing to see how well she was functioning. She had that exact attitude her whole life, until the last end.. she was the most amazing crazy beautiful orange lady cat!
After a few months we a took in another cat. It was the neighbors very young kitten. Because she just left her. Left her to survive on her own. Until she returned.. Because she lived half of the year in Croatia and the rest in Germany.. no more words needed..
Next summer Mjau came into our life. He was a part of 5 kittens that I had been feeding since the mum left them. Poor mum.. she was constantly pregnant and you could clearly see how tierd and unhealthy she was. I tried to catch her a nomorus time's, but failed.
I asked for help multiple times from the nearest animal shelter but they always had their hands full..
For weeks I continued feeding the kittens and slowly trying to bond with them so I could catch them. I needed to catch them so I could again contact the animal shelter in Šibenik. They already had their hands full and didn't have resources to help me but they asked for pictures so they could put them up for adoption. Catching them wasn't the easiest task, they were quite afraid even though I was clearly earning their trust.
One day I spotted one of them quite far away from their regular hiding spot. And he was alone.. usually his siblings where always close. But not this time.
He was crying loudly, clearly in a lot of pain and he could barely walk. I knew this was my chance. He came to me for help. I called my daughter to get the carrier and we went straight to the vet.
The veterinary had disturbing news!!! The did an x-ray and he was shot! Not once but two times with an air rifel. And his hipbone was broken. The bullets where so deep the vet told me the only solution was to leave them there. He got treatment for his broken hipbone and went home with us rapped up in his blue bandage.
I can't stress enough how fast he became a member of our family. Two days of intense care and he was the most loving and cuddling cat I ever interacted with. And he still is to this day. He's laying here on my lap this exact moment 7 years later. Snuggled up. He wants to me close all the time. There is absolutely thing's and situations he's afraid of to this day. He clearly had a few traumatic months at the start of his life.. There is so much more to this story. And more will be told.
