Wild at Life e.V. hasn't added a story.
It has been approximately five months since Wild at Life e.V. rendered support to the animals stranded and abandoned in a Nigerian zoo.
If you have been keeping up with our website and social media platforms, you might have already seen the amazing progress particularly made by the two lions whom we have since named Ton and Mirella.
.
Before we intervened in March, Ton and Mirella were confined to their concrete cages, separated and starved. Mirella, the lioness, was so weak that she could not get up without stumbling and falling over.
Thanks to the generous donations we received, we swiftly provided them with nourishment and in just three short weeks, Mirella gained enough strength to stand up and sit upright independently. Today, both lions have the freedom to roam the lush outdoors, basking in the warm African sun, while occasionally returning to their enclosure for feeding.

Apart from Ton and Mirella, there are 18 other animals in the zoo. They are:
- Hyena - x1
- Peacock - x1
- Ostrich - x2
- Guinea fowl - x1
- Crowned crane - x1
- Crocodile - x3 adults, x2 juveniles
- Alligator - x1
- River turtle - x4
- Rock python - x2

Besides providing essential food, we have made significant strides in improving the well-being of the animals by recruiting an on-site vet who performs regular health checks and a dedicated ground team who not only feeds the animals but also protects them from potential looters.
While the rest of the animals are thriving well, we are still working to improve the condition of Hanena the hyena, who remains skinny. However, we are confident that with time and proper care, her health will improve.
We are currently on the search for contraception options for Mirella. However, we face a financial challenge due to the worsening inflation in Nigeria. The skyrocketing food prices, which have doubled our expenses, make it uncertain if we will have sufficient funds for the procedure. Consumer prices in Nigeria have been on the rise since 2019, as indicated by data from The World Bank, and the economic recovery seems distant.
As we continue our efforts, we must confront the reality of battling rising costs and economic instability. Despite these challenges, we are determined to persevere and provide the best possible care for the animals. Your continued support is crucial in helping us navigate these difficulties and ensure a brighter future for the abandoned zoo animals.
If you are particularly fond of lions or hyenas and would like to be a sponsor of Ton, Mirella, or Hanena, you may virtually adopt them on our new website.
